The importance of foot care

Foot care is a fundamental part of our overall wellbeing. Our feet are the base on which we stand and move throughout our lives. However, we often do not give them the attention they deserve, which can trigger a series of problems that affect not only our feet, but also our health in general.

What happens if we don't take care of our feet?

Neglecting our feet can lead to a range of complications. From calluses and bunions to more serious problems such as plantar fasciitis or peripheral neuropathy, neglecting the health of our feet can affect our ability to move comfortably and lead to a diminished quality of life.

Techniques for the care of our feet

Here are some key practices:

  1. Daily hygiene: Wash feet with soap and warm water, making sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal and bacterial growth.
  2. Proper nail trimming: Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. Don't cut them too short or round off at the corners.
  3. Hydration: Apply moisturiser regularly to keep skin soft and prevent dryness and cracking.
  4. Use of appropriate footwear: Wear shoes that fit properly and provide sufficient support and cushioning. Avoid shoes that are too tight or have high heels for prolonged periods of time.
  5. Regular review: Inspect feet regularly for any skin changes, such as redness, swelling or sores, and consult a podiatrist if problems occur.
  6. Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put extra pressure on the feet, increasing the risk of developing problems such as plantar fasciitis or joint overload.
  7. Rest and elevation: Resting the feet after long periods of standing or strenuous physical activity. Elevating the feet above the level of the heart helps reduce swelling and improve circulation.
  8. Stretching and strengthening: Perform specific stretching and strengthening exercises for the feet and calf muscles to improve flexibility and prevent injury.

It is crucial to understand that foot care is not just an aesthetic issue, but a fundamental part of overall wellbeing. It is therefore important to have regular check-ups with a podiatrist, who can identify problems at an early stage and offer appropriate treatment.
